What is blood pressure and why does your blood pressure information matter?
Blood pressure is the force your blood exerts on your arteries as it flows through your body. If you have high blood pressure, it means that your blood is exerting too much force on your arteries and is making your heart’s job–pumping blood–more difficult than it should be.
In Fact, in 2003 more than 52,000 Americans died from complications related to high blood pressure. Between 1993 and 2004 the rate of death from high blood pressure rose nearly 30 percent.
Having read this, you may be asking yourself ”So what can I do to ensure my blood pressure numbers remain at safe levels? And do practical high blood pressure remedies really exist?”
Step one is to get your pressure checked, which can be accomplished in a variety of ways. First of all, your doctor will likely check your blood pressure at the start of every appointment you have with him. Local clinics, select drugstore chains, even your local fire department can check your pressure in a matter of minutes. You can also find inexpensive blood pressure equipment in most drugstore chains that allow you to check your blood pressure whenever it’s convenient for you.
Blood Pressure Numbers
Blood pressure levels under 120/80 are considered normal. If your readings come in above these levels, you may be one of the millions of Americans that lives with Hypertension, a fancy term for high blood pressure levels.
If your blood pressure consistently reads in the Hypertension or Pre-hypertension categories, then you need to take immediate and lasting action if you want to live a long and healthy life.

What are the usual signs before going to a G.P for testing?
Hi Maldwyn J,
It’s a very interesting question, because we would all like to have some indication of health problems before they strike us down or become chronic and debilitating complaints.
High Blood pressure is not called the silent killer for nothing – it is very difficult to detect, without pro-active monitoring as the symptoms may take many years or decades to manifest themselves.
So, often we only think of our blood pressure when we get some other symptoms as a RESULT of many months or years of having undiagnosed high blood pressure.
These symptoms may include :-
* Chest pain, also called angina
* Shortness of breath when exercising or during another vigorous activity.
* A fast heartbeat.
* Weakness, dizziness, and feeling sick to your stomach (nausea).
* Increased sweating.
You can buy excellent home blood pressure monitoring equipment before you go to the GP, and in many respects this enables you to monitor your blood pressure several times a day over many days, which your Doctor cannot do. This is far more useful than a single ’snapshot’ reading in the surgery, which may be skewed by the very visit itself and the stress associated with being in front of the Doctor.
I hope this answers your question, although maybe not in the way you expected.
Best wishes,
Malcolm.

I know that high BP can cause kidney disease, but going the other way, what is it about kidney disease that causes high BP?
The kidneys are very important in helping to control blood pressure. They sense how much blood is flowing through certain parts of the kidneys (the glomeruli) and how high the pressure is in those blood vessels. If the kidney thinks the pressure is not high enough, it releases a hormone called renin, which acts to raise blood pressure. In chronic kidney disease, the damage in the kidney often means that blood isn’t flowing through the glomeruli normally, so the kidney thinks your blood pressure must be low and releases renin to try and raise it. In the rest of the body the blood is flowing normally so the result overall is high blood pressure.
doest it work good to lowering your high blood pressure? the docotor told me to talk hydrochlerothiazide 12.5 mg once aday!
You should take what your doctor tells you and not listen to these people on the internet. Hydrochlorothiazide works well for mild hypertension, as well as being inexpensive. ACE inhibitors DO NOT protect the kidneys in patients with preexisting renal disease* and they are absolutely contraindicated in pregnancy. Furthermore, the effectiveness of ACE inhibitors and thiazides is also dependent on race and age.
Let me restate… follow what your doctor says with regards to the medication! Hydrochlorothiazide is a fine drug.
I feel like I’m fighting a perpetual war against google!
*ACE inhibitors do work well with a diabetic kidney.
what is the persons nane and some info who invented blood pressure numbers
They were probably invented by the drug companies so they could sell more drugs. I know that’s why they were lowered…
They weren’t really invented. It is measured in mmHg (millimeters of Mercury). That is just the measurement used. I don’t know who decided that was a good way to measure it or who discovered how to measure it.
If you want to read a book that will give you pretty much the cure for that, look in to "NO More Heart Disease" by Dr. Louis Ignarro. It is simply written, he covers foods and supplements.
He won the Nobel Prize for this work.
hello
im 25 male
Suffer from blood pressure since 2002,doctor prescribed treatement and my blood pressure is now controlled.
My question is ,if someone doesnt treat high blood pressure,is possible that will suffer in the future from premature skin aging?
Functional changes in the lining of the arteries precede elevations in blood pressure (BP) by a good decade or longer and an elevated BP by itself does not cause any symptoms thus it is often referred to as a ’silent killer’. Neither hypertension nor its treatment has any effect on the skin and certainly does not cause aging of the skin premature or otherwise. Decades ago there was a concern that certain BP medications might affect the skin but this has been disproven.
My dad has high BP & blood sugar levels. Although he’s administring required medicine, can anyone suggest any good home remedies to keep them always under control.
for the high bp, 2 evening primrose oil capsules or a tsp. of cayenne pepper in lukewarm water.
for the diabetes, fenugreek seeds or peel of a green plantain. see site below for exact info.
I am 26 I drink like a fish smoke like a freight train and have blood pressure averageing around 165/110. My drunken friend who lives the same life style has near perfect blood pressure. I think whole blood pressure thing may be a consipiracy to get me to go to the doctor about 38 times so they can make more money. Discuss.
There are so many things that can cause high BP, even in younger people. You should check your cholesterol. If they are both high that leads to different answers than if your cholesterol is low. There are many deficiencies that can cause high bp in people. You can be B deficient, and taking a B-complex everyday could lower it. You could be L-methionine deficient, and taking L-methionine along with B-complex everyday could lower it. You could be calcium deficient, or potassium deficient. Do you have any other symptoms? Do you have trouble sleeping at night? Does your skin itch? Do you have digestive issues? What foods do you usually crave or desire the most? All of these questions need to be answered before an answer can really be given.
Your blood pressure is high, and it isn’t a conspiracy just to get you to spend money. When your bp spikes, it can cause you to have a stroke. Smoking makes the bp worse, and makes it more likely that you would stroke if your bp spiked.
You can’t compare yourself to others because genetic make-up definitely effects what happens with us! If he genetically has low bp, then doing what you are both doing will raise it, but it will still be within the norm. You might already have a predisposition to high bp, and then what you are doing is exacerbating the problems you already have.
You only have one body to live in. You can live fast, and die young in a smoking/drinking debauchery, or you can live a little more healthy, like quit smoking, and still do nearly everything else, but live longer. It isn’t like you need to give up /everything/ just so you can live to be 100, but you need to consider how worth it is to you to take care of your body, and whether the un-needed strain on your body is worth it.
