The other name of this blood pressure is “silent killer”. Blood pressure is the pressure that is exerted by the blood on the walls of the blood vessels. Having high blood pressure increases in the risk of you to some of the heart problems like stroke or heart attack.

Blood pressure is the measurement of pressure of the blood flowing through your blood vessels against the vessel walls. It can be caused by two reasons one is by the heart as it pumps the blood and the other is the arteries as they resist the blood flow. This blood pressure may be low or high in an individual.

For more information meets: dr jack

Blood pressure is indicated or determined by the amount of blood your heart perhaps pumps and the amount of resistance to blood flow in your arteries. The normal person’s blood pressure is 120/80. If he has less than 120/80 then it is low blood pressure and more than 120/80 and with in 140/90 then it is considered to be as high blood pressure.

High blood pressure develops with no signs and symptoms. This high blood pressure affects everyone in their lives. If it does not occur in your life by the age of 55 then you are likely to develop it any of your age. This high blood pressure does not have any signs or symptoms. But it can cause diseases like heart attack, stroke and many other diseases. But few people feel like suffering with dull headaches, dizzy spells or few more nose bleeds than normal. But the high blood pressure does not occur until it reaches the advanced or life threatening stage.

There are more number of high blood pressure cases than low blood pressure. There are no definite causes for this blood pressure. But the high blood pressure can be developed due to hypertension. The high blood pressure can be caused due to kidney abnormalities, tumors of the adrenal gland or certain heart defects. It is said that this can be occurred due to the intake of certain medications like birth control pills, cold remedies, decongestants, pain relievers and some of the other prescriptions cause high blood pressure. The intake of the illicit drugs like cocaine and amphetamines also cause blood pressure. Having overweight is also one of the cause for this blood pressure.

If this high blood pressure is treated then it can help in preventing serious and life threatening diseases. If there is control over your cholesterol and diabetes then you can control the high blood pressure. If there is change in your lifestyle then that can be helpful in controlling blood pressure. There should be changes in diet and exercises which are prescribed by your physician that will lower the blood pressure. Reduction in overweight helps you in controlling blood pressure. There should be reduction of salt and high diets as they are harmful. Quitting smoke also contributes in controlling blood pressure.

Obesity leads to various ailments and psychological problems. The muscles of obese persons are weak and flabby. Arthritis is also common in obese persons. The weight bearing joints are under constant stress and strain due to excess weight of the body. Blood vessels of obese persons get constricted due to excess cholesterol, which form plaques (atheromas). This leads to high blood pressure, stabbing pain in the chest (angina pectoris), heart attacks and strokes. The digestive system of obese persons is prone to diseases like diverticular pathologies. Gall stones may be formed due to excess cholesterol. Cancers, diabetes are all products of obesity. Obesity also creates problems during pregnancy.

The various diseases and complications due to obesity shorten the lifespan of individuals and can lead to premature death. Mortality and morbidity are both to associate closely with obesity. An obese person not only suffers physical pains but also suffers psychological trauma. He feels inferior, and there may be psychological problems as he is often ridiculed and teased.

Causes of Obesity

The various causes of obesity include overeating, lack of exercise, sedentary lifestyle, genetic factors, endocrine (hormonal imbalances) – all constitute important causative factors of obesity. Among endocrinal causes we need to discuss certain syndromes. In syndromes we have a set of pathologies grouped in a very characteristic manner.

1. Cushing’s syndrome

This is due to excessive glucocorticoid hormones (cortical). This can also occur due to excessive corticosteroid administration. That is, both endogenous and exogenous cortisols can cause cushings. The clinical features are:

• Wasting of tissue myopathy (weak muscles); thin skin, osteporosis, purple abdominal striations.
• Water retention oedema, high BP.
• Obesity of trunk, head, neck.

Apart from there they will be excessively prone to infection; poor wound healing, hirsuitism (hair growth in women).

2. Pickwickian syndrome

This syndrome is caused by many factors; obesity is one of the causes. Enlarged tonsils, acromegaly, myxoedema are all other causes. What happens in this syndrome? During sleep there is collapse of pharyngeal walls leading to respiratory obstruction, sometimes for well over a minute. O2 and CO2 disturb sleep and there is daytime somnolence. Personality changes, intellectual deterioration, headaches, enuresis are all presenting features. One of the important aspects of treatment is to lose weight.

3. Laurence moon biedl syndrome

There is polydaetyly (extra digits) retinitis pigmentos, cataract, microphthalmia, obesity, absent facial hair, hypogenitalism. This is a pituitary gland disorder. Also called Frohlichs syndrome or Adipose genital syndrome, some consider the fat boy of Pickwick Papers as an example of this syndrome. Others put him in the ‘pickwickian’ syndrome, i.e., obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome.

Thus we see in the above syndromes that either obesity is a cause or manifesting feature.

High blood pressure or hypertension damages the coronary artery lining and eventually coronary blockages form. As blood pressure goes up, the blood strikes the side of the arterial wall with greater force. This causes some injury to the lining of the artery and the wall starts to thicken. Then the blood flow is restricted and the heart has to work harder.

Blood pressure is measured as systolic over diastolic. Systolic measures the heart at work, or the pumping of blood as the heart contracts. Diastolic measures the pumping of blood while the heart is resting.

A normal measurement is less than 130 systolic and less than 85 diastolic. The ideal is less than 120/80. When your measurement is 140/90 or higher you have high blood pressure or hypertension.
Even slight hypertension puts one at risk for a heart attack.

Fortunately, hypertension can be prevented. Finnish researchers found that magnesium and potassium are very powerful blood pressure regulators. A diet, which is high in these two minerals, is very effective in controlling blood pressure. Bananas, milk, yogurt, wheat germ, and strawberries are good sources of these minerals. These minerals are available in supplements but you should check with your doctor before taking the supplements.

A diet high in fruits and veggies is also helpful. Nutritionists recommend eight daily servings of fruits and vegetables. Another recommended food is salsa and a half-cup of salsa is equal to a full serving of vegetables.

Most overweight people tend to have high blood pressure. If you are overweight you can lower you blood pressure three points by losing just ten pounds. Research shows that people who eat a breakfast that is low in fat but high in nutrients can do this. And even if you are not overweight, the low fat high nutrient breakfast will still help keep your blood pressure at optimal levels.

Another important factor in lowering blood pressure is relaxation. Epinephrine and cortisol are two stress hormones that raise blood pressure. Engaging in an activity that relaxes you decreases the levels of these hormones. A sure fire way to do this is to introduce some humor into your life. Read a funny book; watch a comedy sitcom or attend a comedy show. Whatever causes you to laugh will also relax you.

Moderate exercise is also effective in preventing hypertension. You don’t have to work up a sweat at your local gym. Engaging in any aerobic activity that you enjoy is just as effective. The easiest one is walking if that is something you enjoy doing. However, when involved in any aerobic activity, you need to perform it for at least thirty minutes to derive the maximum benefit.

Also, remember when doing aerobic exercises you should always be “in oxygen.” This means you should not be short of breath at any time you are actively engaged. For example, if you are walking, you should follow a pace at which you can carry on a conversation and not be out of breath. If you don’t have a partner to converse with, try singing.

There are many hypertension medications available and if you have severe hypertension, your doctor will certainly prescribe these. However, many of these drugs have side effects, some of which are just beginning to be discovered. It is very much to your advantage if you can maintain your blood pressure at healthy levels through lifestyle changes and avoid the use of prescription drugs.

Fast food is considered a staple in many American diets today. Prepackaged items at the grocery store may be easy to prepare, but the labels suggest unhealthy levels of fat and calories. Sodium content is also a major concern. Many people fail to eat well-balanced meals. In a hurry, many people simply forage in the refrigerator for a quick bite, or grab something on the go.

Forget about trying to eat the recommended daily allowance from all the food groups. Therefore, it should be no surprise cholesterol levels are rising accordingly. When a doctor mentions the need to lower cholesterol levels, a patient will generally react in one of three different ways. He/she will adopt a “tomorrow” attitude, decide to die happy, or take personal responsibility toward making the appropriate changes.

Probably the most common reaction to high cholesterol is unbelief as to the serious repercussions. Many individuals believe the problem is no big deal. Tending to put off until tomorrow what should be dealt with today, could lead to disaster. For example, a 57-year-old man’s cholesterol levels are too high. However, he has lost a few extra pounds. Also, he walks a lot and gets plenty of exercise. In fact, he probably looks and feels better than he has in past years. Surely his cholesterol numbers will go down, and he will not have to worry about them anymore. Unfortunately, the man made a fatal error in judgment; he will never see 58.

Uneducated regarding the increased potential for life-threatening heart disease, individuals also tend to take a prescription and resume eating ice cream for dessert, fast food, and other high fat meals. Unfortunately, medicine is not a cure all. Unless individuals make the conscience choice to implement permanent changes in lifestyle, and begin making healthier choices, the medicine will not work as intended. Therefore, patients are still susceptible to cardiovascular disease.

People fail to realize high cholesterol and high blood pressure both contribute to heart attacks and strokes. Although the word is out regarding high blood pressure, motivating individuals to take the problem seriously, high cholesterol has not yet been elevated to the same level of concern. Health professionals are attempting to change patients’ perceptions regarding fatty deposits blocking blood flow.

Sadly, many people are too lazy, or unwilling to change, even when life hangs in the balance. Self-denial is not in their vocabulary. Rather than taking the health problem seriously and facing the truth, individuals choose to believe debilitating/deadly heart attacks and strokes will happen to the other guy. Personally, he/she will dodge the proverbial bullet.

However, fatalism is by far the worst attitude possible, when confronted with the serious health issues associated with high cholesterol. Nevertheless, a surprising number of people are essentially playing Russian roulette with life. Sadly, Americans are a fat society, literally and figuratively. From a young age, individuals are taught to look after number one, to go after wants, and not to let anything/anyone stand in the way. Unfortunately, the same skewed philosophy often translates into poor health habits.

For example, most people know to snack on fruits and vegetables, instead of a piece of chocolate cake. However, the cake tastes so much better, and the excuses start to fly. Dying prematurely seems like a remote possibility, and surely one piece of cake will not make the matter worse. Besides, if death comes early, at least the person will not have to sacrifice, and he/she will die happy. How sad!

By far, the best attitude is the responsible approach. Wise individuals will take the necessary steps to reduce cholesterol levels. Unless cholesterol levels are dangerously high, requiring immediate attention, doctors will suggest lifestyle changes in diet, exercise, and stressors. Proactive people will embrace a healthier lifestyle by eating more fruits, vegetables, and other high fiber foods. In addition, a regular exercise routine becomes a permanent part of every day activities. While getting buff at the local gym may not be a personal choice, a daily walk is a good start to getting the cardiovascular system in good shape.

However, if the patient responsibly complies, and cholesterol levels are still high, a doctor may then suggest medication. However, a responsible person understands the medicine only aids the necessary changes. Medication is not a ticket to observe unhealthy habits. Controlling high cholesterol is an individual choice.

In summary, more Americans are being diagnosed with high cholesterol. Like hypertension, an elevated cholesterol level can become a silent killer. However, patients often choose to put treatment off until tomorrow, or live in a perpetual state of denial, until cardiovascular disease rules the day. Thankfully, wise people know controlling high cholesterol is a personal choice. Enlightened, a lifestyle change is a small price to pay for the opportunity to live a long and healthy life.

If you have converted your garage into a workshop or home office, you are sure to need heating in one form or another. This is because most garages are not built to the same standards of insulation as the main residential building. However, that need not present a difficulty. You may even have the opposite problem during the summer, as garages often do not have windows, or at least large ones, either.

Ventilation could be another matter that you will have to cope with, but we will come to that later. If you have a plentiful supply of dead wood, you could set up a pot-bellied stove, but you will have to vent the flue outside. This is very easily done, since most garage walls are only one brick or block thick. However, if they do not burn correctly, there can be a smell, which you may find disagreeable.

Or you could use a paraffin/kerosene heater. They are cheap to buy and are readily portable. These heaters do not necessarily have to have a flue. They are easy to turn on as many of them have an electric starter. Some also have a thermostat to control the temperature. They can be a hazard if there are children around as they can be tipped over. However, for most people, the glitch would be the smell given off.

You could use an electric hot air heater. They are quite cheap to buy, are easily portable and do not require a flue, but they can create a very dry atmosphere and are costly to run.

One of the most common choices these days is a gas heater. There are many different types of gas heater, but most run on butane or propane. Most of the models are fairly inexpensive. The main advantage of a gas heater is that they give consistent heat, are fairly cheap to run and are portable. Or at least many of them are.

You could have one built in, but it is scarcely worth it, unless you are using gas that needs to be vented. Propane gas heaters also come with or without thermostatic controls. A propane heater could also double as a patio or deck heater on cool evenings.

These gas heaters come in two forms: vented and unvented. The unvented models are the portable ones. They use the air from the room and the vented models have a flue that vents straight out of the garage. The slight disadvantage of the unvented model is that you have to keep the room airy at all times.

Therefore, if you choose a portable, unvented propane heater, you must leave a window partly open in order to allow the exchange of air and these heaters can be used as patio or deck heaters during the spring and autumn/fall. However, the vented gas heaters are fixed and have a flue attached, so they cannot be taken outside. Furthermore, if you decide on a vented model, you would be better off getting a professional in to install it for you by the book.

Owen Jones, the writer of this article, writes on many subjects, but is currently involved with the propane outdoor heater. If you are interested in patio heaters too, please click through to Residential Patio Heaters.
