so im an active 15 year old boy. today i went to the doctor and they took my blood pressure and it was 89/40. i’ve been looking up these charts, and im kinda scared. one chart put that blood pressure right in between "dizzy/fainting" and "coma". should i be worried?

You were comparing your blood pressure to the normal ranges of a full adult. You have to compare apples with apples. Your blood pressure should be compared to a chart in the Harriet Lane manual (a medical book for pediatrics).

The short answer is that you probably have NOTHING to worry about. As long as you feel well, don’t frequently pass out and are able to participate in sports at normal levels then you are probably fine.

Obviously, I can’t perform an examination and you should discuss this with your physician. Just make sure you reference your pressure with the correct tables! I would give you that range but I don’t have this manual with me.

My blood pressure has usually been pretty normal. Yesterday my diastolic was very low, in the 70’s, BUT I’ve been out of my ulcer medication for over two months and have been very sick on a daily basis with that.. Could that have caused the change in the reading? The tech is the one who noted it on the chart and the doc never brought it up when she came into the room for my appointment.

Systolic first number, Diastolic second number 120/70. Systolic pressure is the number that is recorded when your heart is at work, Diastolic is at rest. A textbook normal is 120/70, repetitive diastolic values over 90 are concerning, that is generally when your care provider starts you on a "water pill" or mild blood pressure pill and has you limit your sodium intake, lose weight. I would not worry about a 70 diastolic number, I’d be quite pleased. Now if your systolic number was 70, I’d be very concerned, and you would feel very weak, dizzy and lightheaded. Doc did not bring it up the BP, because it was within normal range. Hope this explains things.

i went to wal-mart and saw one of those machines in there that check your blood pressure and it said 140/80 and i looked at the chart to see what it meant and it said that the first number(140) was at stage one of hypertension but the second number(80) was normal. i am at a perfectly healthy weight 146 pounds and 5/10” and eat great so i’m not sure what it could be.

If you are worried about it, go to your doctor and ahve them check your blood pressure. The machine at Wal-Mart is not quite accurate. Besides, you have to understand systolic and diastolic pressure. Maybe you were in a hurry or walking fast and that’s why your systolic number was slightly above the "normal" number. I put "normal" because the number varies. Also, there are many factors contributing to high blood pressure (or hypertension). Unless there is hypertension history in your family, you should not worry much about it.
