I just took my blood pressure this morning since my body feels acheysince i was having a panic attack last night real bad and i have this dark blue blood vien hurting on the back of my leg i woke up with which im not sure what it is if its a pinched vien or what?
I took my BP and its 122 over 76 i’m not sure if that is good or not though i don’t know all about blood pressure or have a chart.

Perfect. You don’t have a problem. The question is why are you taking your blood pressure if you don’t know what normal numbers are…. If you suffer from panic attacks, you know you worry over things that are not worrisome. Why look for more. That can’t be good for your panic attacks. As for the blue vein, all veins are blue. That’s normal. If it hurts, call your doctor and he/she may have you come to take a look at it to see if it’s anything or not. My guess is not. Good luck.

At school we did a fitness test that involved measuring heart rate and blood pressure lying down and then standing up and IMMEDIATELY taking another measurement. The charts say that an increase in blood pressure of 8 mmHg or more when standing can mean you are very fit, and a decrease is bad. Why is that?
And mine increased by 46mmHg- I don’t think that is good even if it’s an increase, although I was really stressed when taking it and the device wasn’t so accurate (I was paranoid that my blood pressure would be high, and it was one of those cuffs you put on your wrist not arm.)

My results were:
Reclining heart rate: 61 bpm
Standing Heart rate: 72 bpm
Blood pressure lying down: 100/ 61
Blood pressure standing suddenly: 146/74

So I scored really well on the fitness test (got highest possible score), but I’m baffled by the increase in systolic bp by 40! My question is: why does an increase in blood pressure when standing indicate good cardiac fitness, and should I be concerned by my very large increase??? Or is that still a good thing? I doubt it.
I am 5′9, 16, a girl, and 135 lbs, if that means anything ( i heard tall people have higher blood pressure?)

When you’re lying down, your blood is pretty evenly distributed, and your thorax contains a relatively high volume of blood. When you stand up all of a sudden, gravity pulls all of the blood from your thorax down to your legs, causing a big drop in blood pressure. This is why you might feel light-headed if you stand up too quickly after sitting for a while. Now obviously humans get up and sit down quite a bit, and the body has a mechanism so that this constant movement doesn’t become an issue. There is what’s called the baroreceptor reflex. Baroreceptors are located a little bit above the heart and can detect a change in blood pressure. Once they detect a drop in BP (from standing after lying down), they send a signal to the brain, which then sends a signal to the heart and tells it to beat faster in order to maintain a normal BP. In people with poor or defective baroreceptors, they might not be able to compensate for the change in pressure after standing, and they have what’s known as orthostatic or postural hypotension.

I’m not entirely sure about the relationship between height and BP, but I’m 6′3 and have a BP of about 100/70, which is pretty low.

My son, age 29, just had a blood pressure reading of 157/84, but he’s 6 feet tall. I’ve found many comments on the Internet that tall people have higher blood pressure.

1. Is his reading normal for his height?

2. Is there a chart that shows the relationship between adult height and blood pressure?

The so-called normal blood pressure range does not vary by height. No decision should ever be based upon a single reading. A blood pressure of 157/084 mm Hg is certainly above what would be expected. Most physicians accept an office reading – the highest blood pressure reading of any given day is usually that which is taken in the physician’s office – of 135/085 mm Hg as the upper limit of normal. Blood pressure varies widely during the course of a given day and from the lowest to the highest reading the difference may be as much as 50/25 mm Hg. This has increasingly caused physicians to rely upon home blood pressure readings. These should be taken 1st thing in the morning immediately upon awakening as there will be the least variation from day to day. The goal for a 1st thing in the morning blood pressure is 115/075 mm Hg. This is because there is a linear increase in cardiovascular risk above this number. In fact for every 20/10 mm Hg above this there is a doubling of cardiovascular risk. Thus a 1st thing in the morning reading of 135/085 mm Hg implies twice the cardiovascular risk of a reading of 115/075 mm Hg. There is only 1 study that I know of which compared the accuracy of home blood pressure units. They concluded that the Omron and ReliOn were the most accurate. Consumer Reports rated the ReliOn a ‘Best Buy’ as it is less expensive. Please remember that this study looked at upper arm units only. There is absolutely no data of the accuracy of wrist blood pressure units. If I may be of further assistance please let me know. I wish you and your family the very best of health and happiness and in all things may God bless. JR

I’m 31 years old 180 cm tall (5′11") , my weight is 82 kg (160 pound)
today I was in a bad moode but my blood pressure is off the chart

or should I wait till tomorrow

"my blood pressure is 129/90 today should I go and see a doctor ?" — Did you use a digital wrist device to get the odd-numbered systolic BP? Most certainly, this reading is prehypertensive. The AHA (American Heart Association) determined some time back that a normal BP is no longer 120/80. This is now considered to be prehypertensive. The AHA would like to see BPs lower than this. In fact, the diastolic pressure could put you in the hypertensive category.

"but my blood pressure is off the chart" — No, it isn’t. This isn’t "off the chart". 230/110 is off the chart.

Before you see your doctor, find out what your individual normal range is. Check your BP on 3 different days and at 3 different times of day. For example, you might choose a Monday-Wednesday-Friday and on Monday take your BP when you first get up. Write down the date, the time and the reading you get. On Wednesday, take your BP mid-day. Again, record the date, the time and the reading. Then on Friday, take your BP in the evening. Record the date, the time and the reading you get. If any significant events occur before you check (stubbed your toe, had an argument, just saw your cell phone bill, etc.), note this so that it can be taken into account. But try to avoid taking a reading within an hour of incidents like these. If two or more of your readings are still elevated, see your doctor and take this information with you. If you decide to see your doctor, have your BP checked when you’re called in and again later in the appointment.

In this way, if it’s still elevated, you’ll have some useful information to give your doctor.

Hello, I’m a 20 year old male. Since about 6 months I have sporadically taken my blood pressure just for a regular check, through both electronic and manual pressure devices. I have noticed that most of the time my blood pressure is around 130-80/140-90. This after sitting down for 10 minutes.

I started worrying about my blood pressure because my father and my grandmother both have hypertension, and since I’m about 15 I have sporadic acute pains in my right chest, very punctualized. Lately, I sometimes have them ever day for a few seconds, and sometimes I wont have any pain for weeks. It’s mainly chained by stress or anxiety.

I started taking my blood pressure chart more seriously a few months back and saw something strange. I would sit down for 10 minutes and take my BP, to have it high most of the time. Sometimes it would be 120/80 (completely normal). The days it was high I would do aerobic exercise (swimming mainly) afterwards and would rest and take it again, to almost always having it go from high to normal readings. Thus coming to the conclusion that aerobic exercise helped bring it down.

I went to a cardiologist in the hospital who said that I do not have hypertension because if I had hypertension I would without medication have ALWAYS constant high readings, and because of the fact that sometimes I had normal readings that it couldn’t be, he also said my sharp very punctualized acute chest pains once in a while where not Cardiac Symptoms because cardiac symptoms are always oppressive. He took my BP in that consultation and it was 120/80.

I did not come out satisfied with what he said, because if I really did not have anything why are my readings most of the time high (once got to 150/110, but just once) and could this pain I sometimes feel be something artery or vain related? He said it might just be "muscular", yeah right since I’m 15?

Now I have again started to take my BP, and I have noticed that if I sit down 10 minutes and take the reading it would be high in my left arm, and about 10 to 30 mmHg lower on my other arm. And if I wait 5 more minutes, my BP drastically alters (generally lowering), then I would take my BP 20 minutes later still resting and sometimes its higher sometimes its lower, but rarely the same (with a electronic monitor)

The first value is my left arm (after 10 minutes of sitting down), the second value is my right arm. The third value is my left arm again, but 5 minutes later after the first reading. The fourth value is my right arm again, but 5 minutes later after the first reading.

19 sept: 12pm.
139/71X138/63115/60
20 sept 12pm
133/59102/54118/71109/59

20 SEPT 6PM
130/85120/70120/80 110/60.
21 sept 4pm: 126/79 left arm.
21 sept 8pm: 141/67 left arm, 133/78 right arm. 5 minutes later: same value left, 131/66 right.
21 sept 8:30pm: left 150/80, right 125/71
21 sept 10pm: 120/80 left arm, 110/70 right arm.

I also get headaches after very short anaerobic exercise and stretching, and if I receive a massage sometimes. I do not get a headache after aerobic exercise.

This is frustrating because I want to know what I have, I do not think this unstable BP is normal.

Thank you.
In the first paragraph I meant 130-140/80-90
I’m sorry about that the pains are NOT in my right chest, RATHER IN MY LEFT CHEST JUST ABOVE MY HEART IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PECTORAL.

*Some* of those readings, assuming they are correct, are fairly high for an otherwise fit healthy young person. I am going to assume you are not overweight, don’t smoke, etc.

First things first, are you taking the readings correctly, and is your machine accurate? Take it to your doctor’s office or local clinic to compare the readings. You may find that you’re wrapping the cuff too tight (can cause false high readings) or that your machine is inaccurate. Also, if you have an irregular heart rate, electronic meters are generally NOT accurare. This is why most doctors prefer to take your BP manually.

All of that said, you know your body best and with your family history your doctor should take the time to rule out any possible abnormality. A good cardiologist will take the time to reassure you, rule out abnormailities of your heart and blood vessel structure (a large difference between arms can be concerning), give you an echocardiogram, get you on a Holter monitor to check on your HR/BP throughout the day and night, and do some basic tests to rule out hormone disorders, tumors, and other diseases that can cause unexpected high BP in young people. They can also check you for future markers of heart disease like c-reactive protein.

I would get a second opinion.

If the second doctor says you’re a-OK, leave it at that for now and try to reduce any anxiety you feel. Sometimes stress and being anxious can cause BP to rise to unhealthy levels.Keep following a heart healthy lifestyle and hope for the best. While not all cases of high blood pressure can be avoided or prevented, many can, even with a family history. At the very least, even if you do need to go on meds one day, you’ll already be living a healthy lifestyle so you’ll be ahead of the game.
