Experience gained from past disasters has shown that it can take up to 72 hours or more to mobilize a significant relief effort during an emergency.  Therefore everyone needs to be preparing to cope on his or her own for at least the first 72 hours – that’s 3 days – of an emergency.
Of course common sense dictates that we should be prepared for any emergency situation, however the fact is that only a few of us are ready for even the smallest crisis, let alone one of larger significance.
One obvious advantage of being prepared – it allows emergency workers to focus on people in very urgent need of their help. To support their efforts, the rest of us must to be prepared to look after ourselves for at least 72 hours.
The San Francisco area is exposed to a wide variety of hazards, both natural and man-made. The path of destruction that Hurricane Katrina left in its wake across the southern U.S. in August 2005 and the widespread flooding of 2007 – 2008 have provided a horrific reminder of the importance of being prepared for disasters. Unfortunately no part of our country, or North America for that matter is immune to a natural or a man-made disaster.
Earthquakes, power outages, floods, fires, severe storms and acts of terrorism are just some of the potential emergencies. Many of these emergencies have been deadly in the past. Being prepared can save lives and can help to reduce the impact of a disaster on you and your family.

Why prepare your family?

Imagine for a moment that you have no electricity, no gas, no water and no telephone service. Imagine that all the businesses are closed and you are without any kind of emergency services. What will you do until help arrives?
What will you do if your local authorities issue and emergency evacuation order?  Remember, in such a circumstance there will be no stores open for you to acquire anything, the store personal will be evacuating also!
If you have not prepared beforehand for either of these events, both you and your family may have a very difficult time when a disaster strikes your hometown.

While governments are working hard to keep citizens safe, we all have an important role to play in emergency preparedness and response. By being prepared to take care of yourself, you allow community resources to be used more effectively during an emergency and you help keep your own family safe at the same time. Very simply put, emergency preparedness must begin at home.

Start to plan today!
As neither man-made nor natural emergencies can be predicted; therefore it is imperative that we are all prepared well in advance of the disaster.
I cannot over stress this point.

Prepare your emergency kit and your family – so in the case of a major emergency like a flood or blackout – you are ready to take care of yourself and your loved ones for at least 72 hours. You should be prepared to live without running water, electricity, gas, telephones and assistance from safety services for at least three days following a disaster.

What do you need?
You need to have an “Emergency Kit” in your home, ready to go at a moments notice.
Your family Emergency Kit is comprised of two separate parts, a First Aid Kit and a Go Bag.

Your own 72-Hour Emergency Kit should be tailored to meet the basic survival needs of your family. Store your emergency supplies in an easily accessible if evacuation is required. Items may be stored in a 32-gallon trashcan, suitcase, duffle bag, backpack, footlocker or individual pack.

Your First Aid Kit

In any emergency situation, you or a family member may be cut, burned or suffer other injuries. It is imperative that you keep basic first aid supplies handy so you are prepared to assist when someone is hurt. Medical help may not be available during or immediately after a large-scale disaster.
My personal list of items that should be in your First Aid Kit:

Adhesive bandages in a variety of sizes
Gauze pads and bandages
Butterfly Closure bandages
Sterile dressings to stop bleeding (Blood stopper)
Elastic Wrap
Instant cold pack
Cleansing agent/soap and antibiotic towelettes to disinfect
Antibiotic ointment to prevent infection
Burn ointment
Sting Relief Pads (for insect bites)
Sunscreen packets
Eye wash solution to flush the eyes or as general decontaminant
Cotton tips
Scissors
Tweezers
At least two pairs of disposable gloves
A First Aid Instruction Guide
Hygiene kits
Flashlight or brightstick
Medicines such as Aspirin or other pain reliever, laxative, anti-diarrhea medication

Your Go Bag:
A major component of your disaster kit is your Go-bag. Every household should pack a Go Bag — a collection of items you may need in the event of an evacuation order.
Your Go Bag may be assembled or purchased as a ready-made kit for convenience. Your Go Bag should be packed in a sturdy backpack or suitcase on wheels.
The Go Bag should be easily accessible if you have to leave your home in a hurry. Make sure it is ready to go at all times of the year as an emergency evacuation order can occur at any time of the year.

Prepare one Go-bag for each family member and make sure each is tagged with the name of the person it was packed for. You may not be at home when an emergency strikes so keep some additional supplies in your car and at work.

Items that should be in your Go Bag:
The prescription medications you take every day such as insulin or heart medication.
All prescribed medical supplies such as glucose or blood pressure monitors
Drinking Water
Non-perishable food such as food ration bars or Meal-in-a-Box
Manual can opener
Plates, utensils and other cooking supplies
Flashlight and extra batteries or Hand-charged Flashlight
Pocketknife or Multifunctional Tool
Battery-operated AM/FM radio and extra batteries
Whistle
Waterproof Matches
Water filtration bottle
Duct Tape, permanent marker, and paper
Cable Ties
Light Stick
Rope or twine
Emergency cash in small denominations and quarters for phone calls
Heavy work gloves
Disposable lighters
Phillips Screw Driver
Standard Screw Driver
Folding Shovel w/Sheath
Trash Bags
Toothbrush and toothpaste
Personal Hygiene kit
Shave Kit
Maps
Sturdy shoes, a change of clothes, gloves and a warm hat
Emergency Survival Sleeping Bag
Rain Ponchos
Photos of family members and pets for re-identification purposes
List of emergency contact phone numbers
List of allergies to any drug or food
Copy of health insurance and identification cards
Extra prescription eyeglasses, hearing aid or other vital personal items
Prescription medications
Extra keys to your house and vehicle
Disposable camera
Any special-needs items for children, seniors or people with disabilities.

Don’t forget to make a Go-bag for your pets.
Remember that if you have to leave your house due to an evacuation order, you will be living and sleeping somewhere else for a while. It is therefore a good idea to add some activity items to the kids Go Bag.

Some suggestions may be a couple of favorite books
Crayons, pencils and plenty of paper
A puzzle
A favorite toy such as a doll or action figure
One or two board games
A deck of cards
A Favorite stuffed animal or puppet
Favorite blanket or pillow

I sincerely hope that this article will provide the incentive for you to get prepared for an emergency now.  Don’t put if off for another day.  The safety and well being of your family is at stake.

Wart removal is a necessity to sufferers whose daily activities have been inconvenienced or when the warts badly affect their physical appearances. It can be rather embarrassing for the victims to face their friends or just about anyone especially when multiple warts develop on their bodies in visible areas. Worse still, folks who are ignorant about the causes of warts may mistakenly view the sufferers as lacking in personal hygiene and therefore suffer from multiple ugly warts. As you can see, the impact these warts have upon the individual extends beyond just the physical. Suffering from warts can be detrimental to one’s confidence and self-esteem. This article will walk you through briefly what are the different types of warts, what are the likely causes, and what can be done to treat them.

Warts are mostly harmless skin growths caused by viruses called human papillomavirus. The acronym for this virus is HPV. HPV attacks the cap of the skin, and causes warts to develop. All in all, there are broadly 4 wart types. They are foot or plantar warts, common warts, flat warts and genital warts. Genital warts are perhaps the toughest to deal with.

Foot warts also commonly called plantar warts grow on our soles which are subjected to high pressure all the time. Plantar warts can grow in clusters and look speck-like mosaic tiles giving them the name mosaic warts. They are flat in appearance unlike common warts due to the walking pressures. They are known to cause considerable pain and discomfort to sufferers. Plantar warts removal then becomes a must. Research has revealed that ground moisture ie wet floors are good breeding grounds for wart-causing viruses. Our feet are constantly subjected to walking pressure and fine skin cracks can easily develop, exposing them to the attack of the plantar wart viruses. This explains why people who share public showers are at higher risks to developing plantar warts than those who don’t.

Common warts appear in skin surfaces which are broken, or fine skin cracks on our hands, particularly on fingers or nails. These cracked skin surfaces make our skin vulnerable to the attack of HPV. If you look at the common warts on your hand, you will notice that there are black dots on the warts that look like small seeds. These are actually the appearance of blood vessels, and people start to call them seed warts. Common warts also tend to be raised above the skin surface, giving it a rough texture.

The third type is flat warts. Children tend to suffer from these warts which look like small minute pinheads, which is why flat warts are also known as juvenile warts. They appear on arms, hands, knees or even on the face and grow in huge numbers sometimes to 100s of them. Kids who suffer from facial warts are a poor lot as they can be painful and itchy and also affect their psychological development. Wart removal should be administered when this happens to arrest the problem.

Genital warts are the nastiest of the whole lot. Our genital tissues are very sensitive to pain and itch and you can imagine the intensity of discomfort and pain these warts can cause. These warts can resemble little mushrooms or flat bumps and as the name suggests grow on genital areas like the groin, on the penis or anus of men. For the women, they would appear on the cervix, in the vagina, perineal or vulva area. Genital warts are also potentially more dangerous than other warts because of their tendency to develop into malignant growths, ie cancerous. Such warts are normally a result of sexual activities.

Generally, the occurrence of warts is attributed to the exposure of broken skin to the HPV. As such, any activity, or circumstances that could provide such conditions would make it ideal for warts to develop. This explains why warts normally appear on hands of children who love nail-biting. A weak constitution could also make one vulnerable to the viruses. HPV can be transmitted by physical contact with objects used by carriers of these viruses. In short, warts can be contagious and it is best that you avoid sex or direct contact with any known sufferer or share personal items with them. Unfortunately, because of the rather long incubation period these viruses, symptoms are not visible until many months later.

Finally we look at what are the treatment methods available should you seriously need them. Cyrotherapy is the medical name of the process of eliminating the warts by freezing them off. The warts can be excised or cut off with sharp scissors or scalpels, or removed using over-the-counter medications containing acidic agents like salicylic. Warts can be cauterized or burnt off, or surgically removed by laser as well. But I have to caution you to find out more about each treatment method from your local dermatologist as different types of warts require different treatment method. The results and side effects may also vary.

I hope the above information is useful to you. If you are interested to know more about how you can effectively remove those nasty warts in a totally natural and safe way from home, do read up on my blog.

Most of us readily acknowledge that stress is an inescapable part of life in our modern society. It’s in the home, the schools, and the workplace.

Workplace stress management is becoming a buzz word of sorts, as more companies seek ways to cope with workplace stressors. But what is it?

Defining Workplace Stress

“Stress is the reaction people have to excessive pressures or other types of demand placed on them.” (Managing stress at work: Discussion document, United Kingdom Health and Safety Commission, London, 1999)

Stress in the workplace can be either positive stress that results in greater productivity, or negative stress that cuts productivity. Our definition does not say that stress in the workplace is a reaction to pressure, but to excessive pressure. It is when stressors are too demanding, exerting too much pressure on us, that they become negative.

Workplace stress of a harmful nature is intense, continued, or repeated.

Who Is Affected by Workplace Stress?

Everyone is affected at some time or other. As the world tries to increase output and limit time required, workplace stress hits both blue and white-collar workers. Evidence indicates that work that was once considered non-stressful is now approaching high-stress ratings.

On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the highest, increasing numbers of occupations are inching up toward the scale’s top. A recent table prepared by the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology lists law enforcement officers at the 7.7 level. Airline pilots are close behind at 7.5. And while they may seem to cause patients stress, dentists are rated 7.3. Even teachers have a high stress level of 6.2.

Adolescents and older workers often have more trouble coping with workplace stress – women may have more trouble than men. People who have high levels of stress in the family will be more affected by workplace stress.

Family Stress Increases Workplace Stress

When a balance between work and family is missing, workplace stress is increased. Two-income families and single parent families are especially affected. Time-sensitive work can make greater demands than the worker can handle. Work schedules may change, creating stress in handling children. Harsh or bullying treatment at work can cycle into family stress, and back to workplace stress.

Health Impacts of Stress

It is well accepted that stress produces a “fight-or-flight” response in humans. The heartbeat picks up speed. Breathing rhythm changes. Blood is sent to muscles and other vital organs. Adrenaline and noradrenaline is released into the blood, raising levels of energy-providing nutrients. Our bodies are ready to fight the enemy or run from him.

The trouble is, we cannot easily fight workplace stress. We might want to land a punch on the nose of the boss that makes unreasonable demands, but we cannot. We might want to quit on the spot, but we need the income, so we are not able to carry through on our “fight-or-flight” response.

Frustrated body systems trying to cope with this dilemma may give in to consequences such as chronic fatigue, depression, anxiety, migraine, insomnia, hypertension, heart disease, substance abuse, and a host of other problems.

Some employers have instituted workplace stress management programs, with more or less success. In many cases, though, a program of self-help for workplace stress, without individual research, might be more effective.

Self-Help for Workplace Stress

If you were to take a self-help course entitled, as this article is, “Stress in the Workplace – How to Cope with It”, you would expect to learn practical things you could do to cope with workplace stress. Reports and research aside, you would want specific self-help. You would want steps that could help you begin to cope today.

The following practical steps will get you started. Write your answers.

1. Analyze your job. Do you have a clear job description that tells what is expected of you? Are you sufficiently qualified for the work expected? Do you have the tools you need? Does the job use your talent?

2. Analyze your workplace. Is it clean and safe? Is it attractive and laid out well? Are things easy to find? Is it quiet enough for work? Is there a quiet room where you can take a break? Can you take a 5-minute break every hour or so? Are your work hours reasonable?

3. Analyze your feelings. Do you feel that your job is meaningful? Do you think you get enough feedback from others as to whether or not you are doing well? Do you feel as though people see you as an individual rather than a resource? Do you feel that you have the right to say “no” when the workload becomes too heavy?

Once you have answered every question, decide what action you will take to change unwanted situations.

You can, for example, request a clear job description if you don’t have one. You can ask to discuss job expectations. You can request missing tools that would reduce stress.

You can often clean or rearrange a workplace. You can make ergonomic changes for physical safety. With thought, you can create better work flow, or relocate needed tools.

If your job seems meaningless, be creative. Look around for new ways of doing the job, of cutting costs or increasing production. A challenge can make a big difference in coping with workplace stress.

Finally, learn to say “no” to unnecessary demands. Were you asked to “help” a habitual-long-lunch co-worker by adding part of her work to your own? Agree to do it once, but explain respectfully why the practice is unfair to both of you. Are you expected to remain at work until the last person leaves, even though you arrive an hour before anyone else? Ask respectfully if consideration can be given, since your work is done early.

You will best cope with workplace stress when you learn which “monkeys” are yours to feed, and decline to feed anyone else’s “monkey”.

Vedic Numerology – Lesson 1

In the West Pythagorus discovered the the Law of Vibration.

This Law states that each number has a particular vibration. Astro-Numerology is the synthesis of Astrology and Numerology, the perfect integration between the science of the Heavens and the Science of Numbers!

The nine numbers correspond to the nine planets in Astrology.

One represents the luminary SUN

Two represents the luminary MOON

Three represents the planet JUPITER

Four represents the planet RAHU

Five represents the planet MERCURY

Six represents the planet VENUS

Seven represents the planet KETU

Eight represents the planet SATURN

Nine represents the planet MARS

We will define Ketu and Rahu. They are the Nodes of the Moon. The Moon’s Ascending Node is Rahu and the Descending Node is Ketu. The orbit of the Sun and the Moon intersect at two points and they are these Nodes. Since now we know which planet represents which number, let us analyse the different properties of the nine base numbers

The concept of the Fadic Number

If you add up all the digits which comprise your date of birth eg -( 23/06/1955 = 2+3+0+6+1+9+5+5 = 31, 3+1 = 4 ) you get the combined Fadic Number . Here in this example it is 31 . 3 plus 1 = 4. So 4 is the Fadic Number Find out the Fadic Number of the person concerned. There are effects for both Fadic and the Combined Fadic Numbers.

Once you find the Fadic Number of the person, know that that person will have the characteristics of the planet representing that Number. Now we are giving here the effects for Unitarians, who are ruled by the Number ONE.

Personality Overview

——————–

Controller of Life – SUN

It is the most powerful luminary in intrinsic strength. It is one of the functional luminaries and is the King in the Government of the Almighty. Hence all regal qualities are attributed to this luminary.

If the Unitarian – ruled by the number One – is you!

You are interested in the psychic sciences. You are more active than contemplative.

You are regal in outlook and always adopt a pragmatic approach to life. You are more practical than sentimental.

You may be not successful in the worldy sphere as you are not much attached to wealth and possessions. You are not much careful about spending

You are frank and outspoken. Because of that you generate many secret enemies. But they will always dread you because of your inherent fine qualities.

The Sun represents Prudence the greatest of all the seven cardinal virtues. This quality will be predominant in you. As this virtue predominates in you people will honour and respect you even during adversity.

An Analytical Review

——————–

The zodiac sign representing this number is Leo. (Dont confuse this with the birth sign in Astrology). People born under this zodiacal constellation are truly leonine and overactive. Regal in outlook and adventurous in nature Leoninians always push their way to the top. If the Sun is strongly positioned in their horoscopes they will definitely get chances to exhibit their regal valour.

People consider you rash and ambitious. The Sun represents Politics the science of the state. The Solarians are usually politically conscious and politically oriented. If these people are born in between March 21 to April 28 ( viz – when the Sun is in a state of deep exaltation ) their shining in political field will become a living reality.

You can expect political victory when the Sun transits favourable points like March 21 to April 28 and August 16 to Sept 16. Your main drawback is that you jump into things without much aforethought . You should learn to persevere rather than quit.

Patience is another virtue which you should incorporate.

Regarding diseases the most likely disease which may affect the Solarians is the disease of the heart. Blood pressure is also another. Eye troubles are also indicated. Their best fruits and medicinal leaves are dried grapes nutmeg orange lemon and ginger. They should take in honey. They should take care of their health at the ages 19 28 37 55 & 64. They should guard against illhealth and excess exercise during the months of October December & January.

Negative Aspect

————–

The Solarians are prone to sudden anger. Anger is said to be man’s greatest enemy. Sun is considered to be a natural malefic in Astrology. You may indulge in Politics & its negative aspect manifests as lack of mental peace and happiness.

Mantra
——

Japa Kusuma Sankasham
Kashyapeyam Mahadyuthim
Thamognam Sarvapapagnam
Pranathosmi Divakaram

This mantra if recited 108 times daily can neutrallise the negative radiations of the Sun. In the next article we will deal with the Twoians – who are ruled by the Number Two ( Moon).
