What are the usual signs before going to a G.P for testing?

Hi Maldwyn J,

It’s a very interesting question, because we would all like to have some indication of health problems before they strike us down or become chronic and debilitating complaints.

High Blood pressure is not called the silent killer for nothing – it is very difficult to detect, without pro-active monitoring as the symptoms may take many years or decades to manifest themselves.

So, often we only think of our blood pressure when we get some other symptoms as a RESULT of many months or years of having undiagnosed high blood pressure.

These symptoms may include :-

* Chest pain, also called angina
* Shortness of breath when exercising or during another vigorous activity.
* A fast heartbeat.
* Weakness, dizziness, and feeling sick to your stomach (nausea).
* Increased sweating.

You can buy excellent home blood pressure monitoring equipment before you go to the GP, and in many respects this enables you to monitor your blood pressure several times a day over many days, which your Doctor cannot do. This is far more useful than a single ’snapshot’ reading in the surgery, which may be skewed by the very visit itself and the stress associated with being in front of the Doctor.

I hope this answers your question, although maybe not in the way you expected.

Best wishes,

Malcolm.

    There are few obvious symptoms. The most reliable indicators are lifestyle factors that are likely to cause high blood pressure: stress, poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking, excessive drinking etc.

    High blood pressure can show no obvious symptoms at all.I suffer from hypertension and it is controlled through medication. Some people suffer from headaches , dizzy spells or visual disturbances, either one or two of the symptoms or all. It can and often does only become apparent that it it raised through a medical check.you can control it through deep breathing exercises but this takes practise.Apart from the above raised BP is usually unnoticed until a bp check is made.

    Hello friend, first of all let me tell more information about high blood pressure generally. High blood pressure (hypertension) is usually defined as having a sustained blood pressure of 120 – 140/80 – 90mmHg or above. High blood pressure often causes no symptoms or immediate problems, but it is a major risk factor for developing a serious cardiovascular disease (conditions that can affect the circulation of blood around the body), such as a stroke or heart disease. The symptoms for high blood pressure or hypertension are:
    1. headache that lasts for several days
    2. nausea
    3. dizziness
    4. drowsiness
    5. blurred vision
    6. nosebleeds
    7. palpitation or irregular heartbeat
    8. shortness of breath (dyspnoea)

    Usually, when you consult your GP they will measure your blood pressure using mercury or digital sphygmomanometer. If your have any history of heart disease your GP will perform ECG procedure to check your heart condition and at the same ECG machine also will help to measure your blood pressure. So, if you have experience the same symptoms that I mentioned above, it very necessary that you have to meet your GP for further medical consultation.
