Children love trains. There is no question about that and there is not a lot doubt that most boys like trains more than most girls, but who understands why? Is it the speed, the power and the size of trains that hold the appeal? The days have probably passed when most boys wanted to become a train driver, but there are still loads of boys who do.

On the other hand, all children like to see toy trains whizzing about a circuit of track and this love of toy trains often remains with adult males, although rarely with adult females.

Numerous manufacturers have tried to take advantage of children’s fondness of trains. Some make cheap train sets whilst others produce superb train sets that get to be classics and sell for numerous times their cost.

Apart from the actual train sets, there are also stories concerning trains and some of these achieve the cross-over into becoming real toys too. The Polar Express and Thomas the Tank Engine are recent instances of this.

The Polar Express is especially popular in America, where numerous dwellings with young children have electric Polar Express trains running around the base of the family Christmas tree. The Polar Express was first a book and then a very well-liked children’s motion picture.

Thomas the Tank Engine is more well-known in the UK and Europe as a whole. Thomas started life as a children’s book in 1946 but only became well-known after a series of cartoons were manufactured in 1984 for TV in the UK.

He rapidly became world-famous, but most of the Thomas the Tank Engine children’s toys were pulled on a length of string instead of being electrified.

Thomas the Tank Engine has raised billions of dollars in comic strips, books, toys and other spin-offs such as bedclothes, garments, luncheon boxes and wallpaper. There does not appear to be an end in sight to the popularity of Thomas and his friends among the young.

Children older than seven or eight love to join the track into unusual configurations and controlling the speed and direction of realistic model trains. Different countries had their own train set manufacturers, some of them going back 120 years. Hornby and then Triang Hornby was one of the first in the UK, Marx and Lionel held a equivalent position in the United States and Maerklin in Germany.

These days, original Hornby, Lionel and Maerklin train sets in good condition may sell for numerous thousands of dollars. Marx train sets too, although they always were targetted at the budget end of the American market.

Train sets are one of the classic presents for children like a rocking horse, a fort or castle and a dolls pram. It would be a terrible shame if these old-fashioned toys died out, because unlike video games, a basic train set can be built upon until it is something very impressive and then passed on to future generations as an heirloom for continued expansion.

What do people give for Christmas and are those presents any different from thirty or forty years ago? Obviously, there are games around now that did not even exist thirty or forty years ago. In this piece, I would like to take a look at some of the most well-liked Christmas presents of all time. They are not in any particular order, merely as they occur to me

Number 1: the number one desirable Christmas present for sons and fathers for almost a hundred years is the train set. There have been toy train sets for over a hundred years, but they were too costly for working class households until about the 1950’s. There are still more boys and fathers wanting train sets than mothers and daughters. A decent train set will last decades and rise in value.

Number 2: a rocking horse. All children like rocking horses. Boys and girls; girls seem to maintain their fascination with horses longer than boys do, in Europe anyway. This gift has staying power lasting for a number of years even if it is used by many siblings. A decent rocking horse can be passed down generations.

Number 3: doll’s houses and toy forts. All children like to play with either a dolls’ house and dolls or a fort and soldiers. A Wendy House and a tree house are in this bracket as well. You can see children all over the world building make-believe houses and copying their parents’ life.

Number 4: dolls; both sexes like to play with dolls of one kind or another: teddy bears, rag dolls, action men, Barbie and Ken and toy soldiers are all dolls

Number 5: a doll’s pram is still a big favourite with young girls – imitating mum transporting her baby about. Similarly toy pedal cars, which are well-liked with young boys and young girls alike.

Number 6: bikes and tricycles are also well-liked with boys and girls of all ages. We seem to all have an early desire to travel at a speed faster than walking pace.

Number 7: board games have been popular for thousands of years. Roman soldiers used to play a game similar to ludo and chess has been around for roughly as long as that as well. Nowadays, there are hundreds of other board games as well, some of which have become classics already. Some of the board games that have been popular since they were invented are: Monopoly, Scrabble, Cluedo and Risk and there are many more besides that too.

Number 8: cards. The original games of cards were practically all gambling games or could be gambled on, but for decades there have been children’s decks of cards meant to make some children’s card games like Snap and Happy Families more simple and more fun.

Number 9: shoot-’em-ups. Boys have always liked shooting. At the outset cork guns or toy bows and arrows or toy crossbows; then air guns, then paint ball and then real guns.

Number 10: costumes; Children like to dress up, whether girls dress in mum’s clothing and boys dress as Batman; girls dress as nurses or boys dress as Superman, all kids dress up at some time or other in their lives.

To this list of more conventional toys, you can add the modern number ones like computers and gaming machines, but then they have been about for thirty or forty years already as well.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on a lot of topics, but is presently concerned with HO Train Sets For Kids And Adults. If you would like to know more about Train Sets for Kids, please go over to our website for some great offers.

If you are feeling romantic and you want to be alone with your loved one in a romantic place far from humdrum distractions, why not go to Paris and take a cruise? The cruise ships are gorgeous and offer haute cuisine with fine wines and a wide range of dishes. Service on board is superb and if they know that it is a special trip for you, they will go out of their way to make it even more special.

Just by choosing the city of Paris as your venue, you will be conveying the idea of romance, because as everyone knows, Paris has the reputation of being the capital of the world of romance.

So, how do you go about booking one of these cruises? Well, obviously, first of all, you have to be in Paris. This is not a difficulty, if you live in Europe as there are flights and sleeper trains. If you are American, you will have to take the longer-term view and start saving for next year.

Once in your hotel in Paris, you can either ask reception for details or go to one of the many Tourist Information Centres, where everybody speaks English. The cruise line staff will pick you up from your hotel on the chosen day, so that you will not have the hassle of having to find your way through a strange, busy city alone.

Once on board, the pampering begins with your welcoming on board and a free drink to light the fires of romance. You will enjoy four or more hours of this, depending on which cruise you decide on, but they are all wonderfully romantic voyages aboard beautiful cruise liners.

Generally speaking, the cruise will begin on the left bank of the river Seine, usually in the vicinity of the Eiffel Tower. Some of these boats are made of a type of plastic glass, so that your view of the streets and monuments is unimpeded. And of course, all the sights are lit up at night and in quite a stunning manner too. You will also be able to see downwards into the water itself.

As you cruise on this glass boat you will be entertained by some of the finest musicians that Paris can offer you. Solo instrumentalists; quartets; classical music; solo artiste singers or a duet. There are also cruises with more modern music too, but I don’t find them as romantic as the more traditional stuff. However, you can take all these details into account when you book your romantic cruise in Paris.

You will not only pass by celebrated landmarks, you will also pass very close by them and even underneath them. Famous bridges; Notre Dame; the Louvre, and many more. Not only that, but you will see all these incredible historical monuments while being pampered by the best hosts that Paris has to offer and drinking fine wines and champagne, seated at the bow of the cruiser in luxury.

Once your romantic cruise and your meal are over, you will be taken to a sumptuous show on the Champs Elysees, where you will be given a half bottle of champagne on entry. There is no need to worry about driving, so let your hair down and enjoy yourselves.

When you have had a sufficient amount of the high life, you will be transported back to your hotel, in the same manner that you were picked up. However, there are other choices too. You may want to go back to the hotel on a romantic horse and carriage, it will maintain that romantic mood.

Once you get back to your hotel, why not both get in the bath together? Light a few scented candles, open another bottle of wine and play some soft music. It will be an evening you will both remember for the rest of your lives, I promise you.

Saint Croix is the largest of the US Virgin Islands, which lie 1730 miles east south east of Miami and 93 miles west of Puerto Rico. This sector of the Virgin Islands has belonged to the United States since 1917 when they were acquired from the Danish government for $25m in gold to safeguard American shores from German U-boat attack.

At the time, it was feared that Germany might subjugate the islands and construct submarine pens there in order to attack American supply shipping, which was essential to the allies in Europe during the First World War.

The US Virgin islands is a group of about 60 largely unpopulated islands, the four biggest of which are called St. Croix, St. Thomas, St. John and Water Island. (By the way, ‘Saint’ is pronounced in the English manner). The Islands’ residents, however, have other names for these four which are Twin City, Rock City, Love City and Small City respectively.

Christopher Columbus landed there on November 14th, 1493, but there is evidence of human habitation on the island going back to 5000 BC. In fact, the Arawaks and the Caribs made up the islands’ populace, before the Europeans arrived.

Possession of St Croix and the other Virgin Islands changed a lot over the subsequent centuries, but it became infamous to many people as Santa Cruz, which is its Spanish name. As Santa Cruz, St Croix featured prominently in 17th and 18th century stories of pirates and buccaneers on the Spanish Main.

In fact, after Spain initially took control of the island, it changed hands seven times; having been Spanish, British, French, Maltese, Dutch, Danish and now American. The residents of the US Virgin Islands are now US citizens and carry US passports. They also use the US dollar and US laws.

St Croix was an agricultural powerhouse in the Caribbean until the 1960’s when the local government determined it was time to industrialize. The island is now home to HOVENSA, one of the largest oil refineries in the world.

There is also a large distillery, the Cruzan Rum Distillery, which used to produce rum from sugar cane grown on the island. Sugar cane, or its extract, molasses are now imported from the Dominican Republic to make Southern Comfort and Cruzan Rum. Diageo is arranging to build a distillery there too in order to produce Captain Morgan Rum.

Residents of the island call themselves Crucians. However, there is a lot of debate about what constitutes a ‘real Crucian’. Many say that a Crucian is someone who was born and brought up on St Croix, while others claim that descendants of the slaves that the Danes took over in 16th and 17th Centuries are the only true Crucians.

Many Crucians can track their ancestry back to Puerto Rico or other Virgin islands as the sugar cane industry attracted a lot of migrant workers in the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s. There was also an influx of down-islanders (ie from other Caribbean islands), as the locals say, after the industrialization of St Croix in the US Virgin Islands in the 1960’s and 1970’s as tourism and petrol became more central to the economy.

A storm can be distressing for your outdoor fish, especially for large koi carp, which, being large, possibly do not have many places to hide. However, if you have designed your koi fish pond well, you will have taken this into account when your constructed the pond. Similarly, the pond should be deep enough for your fish to be able to get well beneath the choppy surface level.

If you prepared for the storm, you possibly put a net over the fish pond, so the first thing you need to do after the storm is clear up any fallen debris and take away the net, so that you can get a good look at your fish and what happened to them. They may be a bit stressed, so move unhurriedly and try hard not to scare them. Stress is a killer in the animal world as well as in ours.

Did you take the added precaution of sand-bagging the edges of your pond to stop it over-flowing and the fish swimming away? If so, take away the sand bags, so that you can get a closer look.

Now you can get a good look at the disruption, if there is any. Use a net to quietly skim off any leaves that have blown under the netting and onto the pond. If any plants have been uprooted, put them back where they should be. In general, put the pond back as it used to be, so that the fish feel at home. Again, move unhurriedly and try not to put your fish under any more stress.

If you have to carry out major structural repairs, you could put your koi in a child’s plastic paddling pool until you can sort the issue out. Put the pool in a shaded area and fold the netting over it several times so that the fish can not get out and cats and birds cannot get in. If you can aerate the pool with a pump so much the better.

Put a few plants in there with them for cover and feed in moderation. if the repairs will take a long time, you could ask your local pet store to take them away for a week or whatever. You will need to pay board and lodgings, but it is preferable to losing your prized koi carp.

Once any repairs have been carried out, you ought to check the water quality, which could have been affected by debris falling into the pond or by your repairs. Rain, especially acid rain, can have quite an effect, especially if it rained for a long time.

First check the water for nitrates. If the levels are incorrect (see the testing kit for details), you ought to normalize them. If the levels are extremely high, first remove the plants from the water.

Then test the KH levels. If they are low, say, below 100, then you could add a cup of baking soda per 1,000 gallons of water and check again. Whatever you do, the quickest way to de-stress your fish is to reinstate their environment to what it used to be with clean water to swim in.

Gardening would be a lot simpler without interference from garden pests. The majority of garden pests are small, but they sure are a big hassle. The the majority of widespread garden pests are insects, of course and it is a curious thing that these insects are apt to prosper in conditions that are not quite correct for flowers. Most garden pests do not actually live on the plants themselves, they live in rotting rubbish nearby or in sodden soil and go to the plant to feed. Some insects live in the roots if the soil is too wet.

So, one of the first things to do is to try to reduce the number of harmful insects in your garden. You can go a long way down this route by clearing away any old decaying rubbish and decayed wood. Make sure that your soil is well drained and keep cats out of your garden by squirting them with a water pistol until they get the message. Cats discourage birds and many birds eat insects.

You should also support insects and other animals that eat garden pests. Ants can be a pain, but they do eat a lot of insects. Ladybirds do too and so do spiders. Larger animals such as frogs, toads and lizards feed on loads of insects, so a small open-ended garden pond could be used to breed frogs and toads. Lizards will appear on their own, if the circumstances are right.

It is worth taking positive steps to encourage the right kind of garden animals. Never use strong insecticides on your garden as you will kill all the insects that are on your side too and the spray may poison the earthworms that are helping to ventilate and dry out your soil.

A small pond will encourage birds, frogs and toads, but frogs and toads also like a nice rock to take refuge under during the day. Position a few rocks the size of a loaf of bread around your garden in the shade of trees or bushes. Set up a bird table. Birds that feed on bread and nuts do not often eat insects, but some do. However, the sight of other birds in your garden may hearten insectivores to come in and have a look.

There are fundamentally two types of garden pests: the ones that actually feed on the plant and the ones that suck the sap out of it. Caterpillars can be picked off and destroyed of or you can spray the leaves that are being eaten with a poison for the caterpillars to feed on. Many of the sap-suckers can be seen easily, others cannot. A solution of washing-up liquid and water such as you use to wash dishes will kill the majority of of these including greenfly (aphids).

Slugs and snails do a lot of harm, but some birds including chickens and thrushes find them a delicacy. Chickens can be helpful allies in a garden, but they can be destructive too with all their scratching. Otherwise, you can reduce the population of slugs and snails by killing their eggs.

They tend to lay their eggs in decomposing leaves or rotting compost, but not in compost heaps which are normally too hot for them, so a good clean up will eliminate a lot of the next generation.

You can exterminate the adults by placing a few low containers of beer by your plants. The slugs will drink the beer and drown. It is extremely effective. Slug pellets should finish the t-totallers off. Taking these actions will greatly reduce the number of garden pests attacking your plants.

Are you thinking of going on a vacation in the near future? How do you normally go? Do you fly there and then sort yourself out or do you take vacation packages? It is clear that vacation packages are simpler and often cheaper too.

If you go DIY, you will need to book reservations on an airplane or a train and a hotel and taxis and a car hire company. If you would rather avoid all this, you could book either a vacation package of one of the all inclusive vacation packages.

Although many vacation packages are extremely good, some people decline to use them. This can be for several reasons, but the most common are out of a of feelings of adventure, independence and snobbishness. In fact, most of the people who do not take vacation packages are younger, single people.

Married people with children are the main users of vacation packages and especially all inclusive vacation packages. There is a difference between the two kinds. All inclusive vacation packages are great for families with hungry children. You know, the normal variety, who are always saying: ‘Give me a dollar for an ice cream, Dad’ or ‘I’m hungry, Mum!’.

On an all inclusive vacation package, all of these snacks and three main meals a day and all drinks are included in the cost of the holiday – hence, the name, all inclusive vacation package.

However, there is more to it than that. All inclusives also incorporate on site games and amusements and some others as well. For example, a Caribbean all inclusive vacation package might include the use of snorkels and goggles, but it would seldom stretch to the use of scuba gear or wet suits.

Another benefit of the all inclusive holiday resort is that they often cater for families with young children. They might supply child alarms in the chalets and free entertainment for adult holiday makers in the evening and night too. The resort might also provide baby sitters and a free cab into town.

All inclusive vacation packages are a very different product from normal vacation or rental packages. All inclusives are more geared towards families with young children between, say five and fifteen, because children of this age eat a lot, although it is usually junk food, which usually costs a lot on holiday, but is in fact, cheap to produce. The evenings’ entertainment is also on site so that parents can be easily contacted if there is a problem.

On the other hand a normal vacation package will usually provide breakfast only, so that you can go out for the day and do what you like.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece, writes on many subjects, but is currently involved with St Croix all inclusive vacations. If you are interested in St Croix Vacation Rentals in the US Virgin Islands, please click through to our site.

I wouldn?t bother so much having my bed partner lie on the couch in the living room snoring, as I would if he suffered from sleep apnea, a more severe and harmful disorder. This breathing disorder during sleep that is followed by interrupted and shallow breathing can be treated easily provided it is found out in time and not mistaken for ordinary snoring.

Hence it is best to understand what sleep apnea and its indications are, so we can help a loved one that is suffering from the disorder of sleep apnea.

You need to know that untreated sleep apnea could hamper you having good sleep at night and make you feel tired, fatigued, mentally exhausted and least productive on the next day. The breathing pauses could last anywhere between 10 to 20 seconds, occur up to 100 times on the same night. This would reduce the amount of the deep natural sleep that is necessary for the body to function properly physically and mentally during the daytime.

Most of us know the implications of not having a sound night?s sleep and this is no exception for a person with sleep apnea. He/she would suffer from chronic daytime sleepiness, lack of concentration and slow reflexes that could make one have increased risks for accidents.

In addition the long-term results of sleep apnea are grave health disorders like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and weight gain.

Look out for symptoms of sleep apnea like loud and constant snoring, choking, gasping, snorting in sleep and long interruptions in breathing. In addition observe if he/she feels weary and sleepy during the day even after long hours of sleep at night.

In addition, look out for dry mouth or sore throat on waking up, morning headaches, restiveness, insomnia, grumpiness, bad temper or even depression. Waking up feeling restless, forgetful, with a lack of concentration power and recurrent trips to the toilet at night could be other indications.

On observing these symptoms consult a specialist. He/she will prescribe an overnight stay in a hospital to observe and diagnose sleep apnea. It is best to know that just snoring or some of these indications does not lead to a diagnosis of sleep apnea.

Snoring could be just normal and it does not interfere with the quality and quantity of sleep and make one feel chronically fatigued, sleepy or lack of concentration, all of which could result in accidents. However the onus of diagnosing lies with the specialist.

It is a good idea to take into account that sleep apnea could be of various types. In an episode of obstructive sleep apnea, the soft tissues on the back of the throat relax and obstruct oxygen from entering the lungs during sleep and it results in a brief disturbance of sleep.

However, central sleep apnea is less well-known but more serious and takes place when the brain fails to signal the breath regulating muscles to breathe and this could make one aware than one has woken up. The most serious of sleep apneas is the amalgamation of both these apnea known as complex sleep apnea.

Believe me, sleep apnea could be readily discovered in the early stages with your bed partner?s help. A sleep diary would help him/her record your snoring, gasping, choking, or other unusual sounds. In addition a video recording of the patient would help you note signs of sleep apnea.

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on many topics, but is now concerned with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. If you want to know more, please go to our web site at Sleep Apnea Surgery Techniques

Before you can buy contact lenses, or specs either for that matter, you will need to submit yourself to an eye test. However, the eye test for contact lenses is a bit more detailed than a test for regular glasses, so you should tell the optometrist which sort of lens you want before the test starts in order to save time.

An eye test will normally start with a physical examination of your eyes for signs of eye disease such as cataracts and glaucoma or general problems such as high blood pressure or diabetes. This is why it is so important to have an eye test at least every two years, because a medical doctor does not give scheduled checks for cataracts, diabetes or glaucoma, the three of which can make you blind.

Your optometrist may ask other questions as well such as why you would prefer to have contact lenses rather than spectacles and whether you have had any trouble with your eyes. The decision to wear contact lenses or specs is entirely yours, although in some countries spectacles might be free whereas there may be a charge for contact lenses because they are more expensive.

The results of the optometrist’s test will yield a set of numbers which will tell an optician the strength of the lens required for each eye as the lens required for each eye is usually different. This is commonly referred to as your prescription. Then you take this prescription to an optician to choose your spectacle frames, if you are having specs, and to have your lenses made or and installed.

In the case of specs, lenses will either have to be cut or and adjusted for the frames that you would like and in the case of contact lenses, you may have to have the lenses manufactured. In either case, you might be lucky enough to walk out of the shop wearing your glasses or contacts or you may have to return in a couple hours or even a few days. No optician worth his salt will sell you costly lenses without a prescription.

There is an clear important difference between spectacles and contact lenses – contacts have to come into contact with your eyeballs and not all eyeballs are exactly the same shape. Therefore, if you want contacts, the optometrist will have to measure the exact curvature or the exact contours of your eyes and this will be part of your prescription. Some eyes are naturally drier than others and this can affect the type of contact lenses that you ought to purchase.

Your optician will then frequently give you a pair of trial contact lenses and require you to return a couple of days later for further tests. You may have to try out several types of contacts before you find a kind or marque that suits your particular eyes and sight.

Once you have contacts that seem to suit, you will have to follow the directions and advice that comes with them and return for your check-ups when you are asked to. These follow-ups are important to make sure that the contact lenses are not irritating your eyes or causing more serious conditions.

The most commonly used element for wedding rings and engagement rings is gold. White gold is even more exclusive. Gold wedding rings look good whether the design is just a simple, plain band or an engraved ring like a Celtic Knot. Gold rings can be given on other occasions too of course. Some people give their children a gold ring for their coming of age birthday.

Until not so long ago, it was customary for the man to give a gold ring when he asked for his girlfriend’s hand in matrimony. However, nowadays it is more usual for the couple to go shopping for the engagement or wedding ring together. This makes good sense, even if it is less romantic, because the wearer can get the design that she likes.

Gold symbolizes purity in many cultures and that is one of the reasons why it is given to brides and brides to be. The symbolism is all but lost though in today’s consumer society in the West. For many people though it still represents the hope that they will stay true to each other, until the day they die. It is a way of showing that the wearer has taken vows and intends to stick to them.

There is a huge variety of gold rings available. However, the variety lies not only in the design but also in the purity of the gold. Logically, the purer the gold, the more pricey it is. In the UK, most gold rings are either 9 or 18 carat. In the USA, most gold rings are 14 carat, but in Thailand, not many people would buy gold that is less than 18 carat and 22 carat is the norm for women. Pure gold is 24 carat, however pure gold is so malleable that you can mould it with your bare hands.

This might sound fine, but it is not. A 24 carat gold ring goes out of shape every few hours, just by you doing what you do every day and then it can pinch your skin. Opening a door can buckle the ring. This means that you can not set stones in pure gold, because they would soon fall out. Pure gold rings are best not even engraved because the design would soon rub off.

Therefore, the best place to begin, if you want a gold ring, is to think about what style you want. Do you want precious stones set into it? Then you cannot really go above 18 carat. If you cannot afford 18 carat then 9 or 14 carat is for you. If you want something like a Celtic Knot ring, that is one with an engraved pattern, then anything up to 18 carat for you too, depending on your finances. If you want a pain band of gold, then a thick ring of 22 carat gold would be great, but not if you do a lot of manual work.

If you really want something unique, why not have a gold ring made to your own design? It is not so expensive as you might think and you will end up with something exclusive, especially if you provide your own stone to be polished too. Such a gold ring would become a family heirloom and could stay in the family for centuries.

Owen Jones, the writer of this article, writes on many topics, but is currently involved with theCeltic Knot wedding ring. If you have an interest in wedding rings too, please go to our website now at White Gold Claddagh Ring
